CAIRO
Africa's largest city, believe it or not, and the starting point of our GOBUS tours. Home to a couple of big sandy toblerone chunks - the pyramids and awesome Sphinx. You'll find all of King Tut's treasure at the city's famous museum and plenty of 'ancient Egyptian' knock-offs in the city's famous Khan al-Khalili bazaar. Do a felucca night cruise and you'll see Cairo's impressive skyline and for a top tan head out to the Saqqara Palm Club near Giza.
PYRAMIDS OF GIZA
Sole survivors from the ancient Greek-listed Seven Wonders of the World, the pyramids are the planet’s oldest tourist attraction and still one of it's best! A
highly skilled corps of mathematicians, masons, surveyors and stonecutters did the job of building the Pyramids. 100,000 slaves were used to carry out the backbreaking task of moving and laying the stones of the largest pyramid - Cheops.
LUXOR
Literally a living museum at over 4000 years old Luxor is ancient Egypt! The East Bank is home to the awesome Temple of Karnak and Temple of Luxor. The Valley of the Kings on the West Bank was made famous in 1922 with the discovery of King Tut's treasure-filled tomb. This was possibly one of the most dazzling archaeological finds ever. Other highlights include the Valley of the queens and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut.
ASWAN
Beautiful town on the River Nile and start point for both the felucca journey upstream to Kom Ombo and also down to Abu Simbel. Elephantine and Kitchener Island are worth exploring, and sampling the restaurants along the corniche is a good bet. Head out by boat to Agelika island to explore the temple of Philae and dine with the locals in the laid-back Nubian town sampling a unique array of tasty dishes, yum!
DAHAB
Dahab meaning "gold" in Arabic is a small, intimate, easy-going resort right on the Red Sea coast on the Gulf of Aqaba. As one of Egypt's most famous hotspots Dahab is favoured by travellers for its fab diving, snorkelling and swimming and the ultimate place to just hang-out and relax! With its cool shopping markets, bubbling after-hours scene, good eats and stunning location, Dahab is a must-do for anyone heading to Egypt!
ABU SIMBEL
Site of the amazing rock-cut temple of King Ramses II. You may have seen it on TV? Guarding the entrance to the temple are 4 colossal seated statues of the pharoah himself, staring out across Lake Nasser. Over the centuries temple was all but lost to humanity due to shifting desert sands, however it was rediscovered by chance in 1813 by a Swiss explorer and eventually in the early 60's an excavation team restored it and once again the full glory of the temple of Abu Simbel was revealed to the modern world. This is a major high-light and can be added as a bolt on to any GOBUS Egypt tours.
ALEXANDRIA
Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria has a great stretch of coastline, the Mediterranean! An impressive seafront corniche where the seafood joints do a roaring trade is reason alone to visit. The city also possesses Roman catacombs, souks and relics from its amazing past. Alex also has some great period bars and cafes serving good coffee and ice-cold Stella! Nearby is the town of El Alamein, if you'd like to pay your respects to the Commonwealth war dead.
