ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

For hundreds of years the Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling has been taking place on a steep hillside in the English countryside. Initially held at midsummer, the event now takes place on May Bank Holiday Monday.  Some say this event is handed down from Roman times, others believe it is an ancient Pagan healing ritual(!)

A guest roller starts the race by releasing a 7-8lb round of cheese down a treacherous slope. Competitors then hurl themselves down the slope after the cheese. The idea is to catch it but as the cheese is given a 1 second headstart, and tends to fly down at about 70 miles per hour (approx 112 km p/h) it tends to be the first person to arrive at the foot of the hill (usually after numerous tumbles) who wins the cheese.

There are a number of races every year including a ladies race that make this event a fantastic day out.

The 2009 Cheese Rolling Festival has come and gone - prices and the full details of the 2010 trip have not yet been finalised, but will be released in the new year. Watch this space!
 

CHEESE ROLLING - 1 DAY ITINERARY 

Monday 31st May 2010:
Departure from Stamford Brook, London is 7.30am for the 3 hour drive to the Gloucestershire Cotswold's. Upon arrival we'll get our race shirts on and get limbered up for the downhill frenzy. For those wishing to just 'watch and learn' there is plenty space for spectators.

The action starts at midday and lasts for around three hours. After the conclusion of the final race we'll load up the coaches and return to sunny London where we have a huge post race party night lined up. Expected arrival back in London is 6pm.
